Baby, let your hair down.

This week's class was about the flow state. Which is essentially stepping into your "zone" while completing a task so in-depth, that you lose a sense of time. Learning about it in class, I realized I entered the flow state plenty of times. For instance whilst braiding hair. Doing hair can be seen as a task since you have to part the hair neatly, gather the hair, attach the braiding hair, and braid it all the way down to client's hips. Long hair is the trend nowadays.

I chose to write my poem for the class based on a specific time while I was doing hair, and someone else was in the room watching me. I have anxiety really bad so I get extremely anxious when people are watching me. I've been trying to challenge myself by going for anything, which is why I volunteered to go early on during the open mic. I described the other person's eyes watching me as "beams of heat" on the back of my neck, while my palms were really sweaty due to the nervousness. As you can see I tried my hardest to get very descriptive and this took me no time whatsoever. I was really in a creative flow state.

In the assigned reading, it stated that, "We have all experienced times when, instead of being buffeted by anonymous forces, we do feel in control of our actions, masters of our own fate." This was very true for I could have easily used the anxiety of the person watching me, to take over completely and not be able to continue doing hair. Instead, I overcame it. Once the "filled sponge was squeezed to erase" as I stated in the poem, I was able to gain control of my actions and masted the practice of braiding.

Palms rained

I felt it's beams of heat on the hairs of my neck
It watched
I was dense
Though once the rays were gone
And the filled sponge was squeezed to erase
I parted the Nile
And grabbed the three strands
Fingers played hopscotch
My body swayed
I was a leaf through the wind
Endless continuation
Endless as the waters.
As each piece was completed another nerve displaced
A masterpiece finished

Class 8/10 I loved everyone's creativity.

  1. It's good to hear that you enjoyed the in class activity. Doing hair especially doing braids is a great creative expression for people and the stylist. Being able to enter a flow state while doing braids is an amazing thing to hear.
