This is what my brain felt like in real-time during this challenging yet amusing activity during class. Professor started off with two simple scenarios, which we later find out were nothing but a foreshadowing teaser for what was yet to come. It took me quite a while to open up to the fact that she wants us to go outside, outside the box, and not just- the box. I often felt restricted to reread the scenarios repeatedly just to make sure I wasn't going over any limits. Compared to other people's answers my own felt dry the first two rounds honestly. In my head though, I'm doing the darn thing. You know, like when you plan that one joke that's just gonna have everyone laughing and it comes out stale. That's how I felt when she asked us for some of our "more creative answers", and I said things like "oh, safety pin your pants together."
Yea, not it.
Things didn't get very spicy for me until we got into groups to discuss the many, many uses for a paperclip. And I was on a roll. My group members said a great number of things but I felt like I did really good coming from making things up that weren't as creative before. Maybe it was the practice. 👏
There were many things I noticed after experiencing exploring my creativity for this week and learning the different ways of thinking during class. Before the mind games, we discussed trying to reach divergent thinking, which is seeing many possible answers and eliminating the more structured convergent thinking. In other words, going outside the normal answers.
Escape the "duh" answers. (Which I hardly did)(Don't be me)
Earlier I discussed feeling limited from expanding my creativity outside of the possible answers before I had a complete fluency of ideas, alongside my group members. This comes from an obstacle to creativity, which we talked about in class, creative blocks, and inner critics. It was easier to work in a group with others because you're able to get insight into other perspectives, and it triggered a great response in my head. I began using associative thinking, using one of my group members' concepts and mixing it with my own to create another answer to add to the list. This was fun.
I'll now start rating the classes lol: 9/10
I'm happy to hear you were able to be more relaxed and creative when you got with your group during the in class activity. We sometimes have a tendency to criticize our own ideas because they are not realistic, but with creativity some of our illogical ideas are actually reasonable and sound. Also don't forget to add a quote from the readings in our next posts.
ReplyDeleteHey Makari!
ReplyDeleteI completely understand how hard it is to stop limiting myself from the constraints of my mind and allowing myself to think further! It truly is easier said than one when we are constantly asked to give more direct responses and other classes. However, it this class we are encouraged to allow our minds to wander! I am so pleased to hear how your mind began to open when you heard other perspectives as well!
